Happy Samhain! Happy Halloween! Joyous Winter Nig Happy Samhain! Happy Halloween!Joyous Winter Nights!Blessed Dia de los Muertos!Happy All Saints! However you celebrate the season of death, the last harvest, and the onset of Winter, may it bring you peace and comfort. For my kindred, this time is dedicated to our ancestors and the spirits of those who have passed. We welcome them into our homes as the darkness grows, to tell stories and share happy memories. We feed them and set out drinks for them (there's a beer there for you, Dad!) and we'll hang out with our honored dead until Yule. I hope you'll find little hints that your departed friends and family are with you throughout your daily lives!Hail to the Alfar! 🍂💀🍁

Hlaut Staves, or blessing sticks, are used in Blót Hlaut Staves, or blessing sticks, are used in Blót rituals to sprinkle sacrificial liquids on altars, participants, and around sacred spaces. Yes, this once included blood - but today we forgo the messy cleanup for mead, ale, beer, and water. ;)Traditionally, these sticks were bundles of leafy branches harvested on ritual days. As a city goði, access to fresh green is pretty limited, so I use a permanent bundle. I like the idea that the energy and meaning of my blóts builds within the bundle with each use. My hlaut stave becomes more meaningful with each ceremony. Birch twigs with turned handles in Willow, Birch, Walnut, and Douglas Fir.The birch twigs were harvested from a storm-fall tree on Fairy Lake, Ontario. The walnut, willow, and birch are from storm-fall trees on my family's property in Ontario.

Prayer beads in various forms have been a part of Prayer beads in various forms have been a part of nearly all religions, across many cultures, and throughout history. The Ancient Norse were no exception, and excavations have unearthed numerous examples of beaded strands, with a wide range of materials – glass, shell, rocks and gemstones, pearls, and precious metals. Bead sizes and materials can vary on each strand, and sometimes amulets and charms were added, whether magical, protective, religious, or simply decorative. The use and meaning of these common grave goods have been lost, but with so many examples of prayer beads in other cultures, parallels can be drawn, and we can re-create their use in ways that are meaningful to modern Heathens.
