BURL
A burl is a woody outgrowth on a tree featuring chaotic, swirling grain patterns caused as a response to environmental or biological factors.
The pattern and colour of burl is highly prized for its unique patterns.
Burls are protected in Canada – in order to harvest a burl, the tree must die of natural causes.

CURLY GRAIN
The base of a tree’s trunk can be under tremendous pressure as the tree grows taller and more massive.
The weight of a large tree compresses the wood at its base, forming ripples and waves within the grain. These ripples are called “curl” and create a stunning chatoyance when polished.
